Species listed on the Sharks MOU and their status on the CMS Appendices

Annex 1 of the Sharks MOU lists species that have an unfavorable conservation status and which require international agreements for their conservation and management, or would significantly benefit from the international cooperation that could be achieved by an international agreement.

Annex 1 of the Sharks MOU is open for further listing of species which may include any of the migratory species, subspecies or populations in the Class Chondrichthyes (sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras).  Proposals for modification may be made by any Signatory.

Due to the independent nature of the MOU, Signatories may include species in Annex 1 which are not contained in any of the Appendices of the Convention. At the same time, species included in CMS Appendices are not automatically covered by the MOU. However, it was decided at the 1st Meeting of the Signatories, that all species on Appendices of CMS, not included already, would be considered for inclusion in Annex 1. 

Currently, 37 species of sharks and rays are included in Annex 1 of the MOU. For more information about the species, please refer to the list below.
